Statement by Jim Vokal on LB461 Cloture Vote

LINCOLN, NE (May 2, 2017) – This is the statement of Platte Institute Chief Executive Officer Jim Vokal on the unsuccessful cloture vote for LB461’s tax reform. Cloture is a motion that ends a filibuster in legislative debate, and requires 33 of 49 votes in the Nebraska Legislature:

“Nebraska taxpayers should be proud of the hard work shown by the Revenue Committee and the majority of the Nebraska Legislature for their support for continuing the tax reform discussion with LB461. Nebraskans have been asking for these changes without a satisfactory response for decades, so we always knew it was going to be a real challenge. Tax reform in Nebraska effectively requires a supermajority vote and, despite most senators wishing to advance tax relief, LB461 fell 6 votes short of that today. Besides the small number of ‘no’ votes, there were 13 senators today who stood on the sidelines not voting, many who campaigned on tax reform, and who could have prevented this,” said Vokal.

Jim Vokal will be available for comment on LB461 and tax reform in Nebraska on Wednesday, May 3. To schedule an interview, contact Adam Weinberg at (402) 452-3737 or at aweinberg@platteinstitute.org
