Institute releases latest report: Unicameral Vote Transparency

The Platte Institute for Economic Research released its latest policy report Thursday, Oct. 16, entitled "Unicameral Vote Transparency: It’s Time to Get Citizens Out of the Dark." The report, authored by Senior Policy Analyst Nicole Barrett, JD, outlines the lack of transparency in the Unicameral’s voting procedure and also calls for that shroud of secrecy to be removed.
Among the highlights of the report:
>  Nebraska is one of few states nationwide which does not provide citizens with a full record of how each legislator voted on every bill.
>  During the 2007-2008 biennium session, constituents didn’t know how their senator voted 65% of the time.
>  The Platte Institute calls for the Unicameral to modify its rules in January 2009 requiring the recording of the yeas and nays of each member on every motion regarding the passage of bills, constitutional amendments or the amendments to each.
>  The Platte Institute also calls for senators and citizens to work together to enact a constitutional amendment ensuring vote transparency becomes mandated by law.
