John McCollister grew up and attended high school in Omaha, graduating from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln with a degree in Business Administration.

John served five terms on the publically elected Metropolitan Utilities District Board of Directors, which provides natural gas and water to the Omaha area. In 2008 McCollister sought but was an un-successful candidate for the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
McCollister is currently Board Chair for the American Diabetes Association - Nebraska-Iowa Chapter and has been involved with the Scouting program for more than 40 years as a Scout, Scoutmaster and Cub master. John currently serves on the Executive Board of the Council and was an officer in 2000-2003.
